Sunrise and sunset at Teluk Iskandar

Teluk Iskandar is a stretch of coastline a few kilometres to the south of Mersing town. It is named after the previous Sultan of Johor and became famous some years back for the discovery of gold. Hundreds of hopeful prospectors dug up the beach at low tide, in hope of finding fortune in the form of tiny specks of yellow dust among the dark grey sands.

At the peak of the gold mining activity in December 2007, many gold-diggers camped out on the beach. The price of woks and frying pans in Mersing town shot up like nobody's business.

The bay has now returned to normal. The beach itself is not really that pretty when compared to other beaches on the east coast of Malaysia. Nonetheless, it is a good spot to practice with some sunrise and sunset photography...

Beautiful, Oldstock, thank you. Shame on me, being a Johorean and have never been there!

mamasita,

Tq. Sunrise and sunset shots depend a lot on luck as well. When I stayed at a beach hotel in Kuantan recently, I wanted to shoot the sunrise too but the light and cloud formation was not good.

NanaDJ,

No need to be ashamed lah... Teluk Iskandar ni dekat dgn Kg. Sri Pantai. Not as famous Air Papan.

You asal Johor kat mana ek?

Kak Kama,

I was inspired by the Dungun sunrise photo on your sidebar :-)

Moira,

Err.. what do mean, getting better? Was I not good from the start... wakaka!

Udah ada dslr... tapi yg paling basic, setakat buat permulaan. Sekarang ni mengidam nak tambah lens :-)

Hliza,

Generally I used the P setting but sometimes I switch to A setting to control the depth of field. Cuma small aperture in low light means slow shutter speeds, so a tripod is recommended. But I only used the tripod for the first few shots when the light was just breaking... after that is was just steady hands.

Some shots were taken at the preset landscape mode, just to see how it turns out. That's the beauty of digital photography, you can shoot as much as you like and try all the different settings available.

Lili,

I'm still in the learning process and trying to understand the capability of my camera.

If you wish choose any pic you like and I'll email the original file. Those shown here are already compressed.

Wow, really Oldstock?
Hmm...with my frequent 'turbulent emotions' (hehe!...no, no..lawak jer).. my choice would be the second last and third last photos!

Looking at these two pictures set me in the right mood which I can't explain!

Thanks in advance.

Oldstock,
Beautiful pictures. Been busy with Mr. Nikon huh? I was just thinking of putting my sunset pictures too.

Amazing.

It takes certain eyes (blessed ones) to notice and capture these scenes too :)

Salam zafi,

The sky is most colourful at dawn and at dusk. The sand at this particular beach is not actually white but more dark grey... therefore not that pretty to take a photo of during daytime.

Lili, check your email inbox.

My personal favourite is the 2nd last pic.

As,

Kebetulan cuti balik kampung, that's why I got the Nikon to do extra work.

Looking forward to having a look at your sunset pics too!

Puan Chahya,

I do hope to be blessed, but I do not have eyes as lovely as yours... :-)

I'll be missing you. Do drop by sekali sekala bila ada kelapangan.
