Kueyteow Doli dan Mee Kicap

In May last year, I posted about a makan place called Mali's Corner in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. That place is famous for its Penang Char Kuetiaw. Blogger friend Ladymarko then suggested that I should try the famous Kuey Teow Doli in Taiping, Perak.

I was in Taiping with a colleague on Monday, for the first time. I remembered Ladymarko's comment and decided to look for the place. We had to stop to ask for directions. An elderly gentleman manning a provision shop gave me vague directions but we found the restaurant soon enough.

Doli Kuey Teow Goreng, Taiping

The bill shows standard plate RM4 and large plate RM6

I had the big plate kuetiaw while my colleague had the standard sized one. The taste was okay la.... tapi saya lebih suka yang Mali's Corner.

Driving back to KL later that afternoon, I stopped at Tapah Rest Area for a break. Although I had just eaten a large plate of kuetiaw a few hours earlier, I couldn't resist buying myself a plate of mee kicap from the Chinese-owned Express Stall. This place was a regular stopping point during my frequent trips up north a few years ago.

Mee kicap at RSA Tapah, southbound

There's actually nothing much to shout about this mee kicap. It is an exceedingly simple dish of yellow noodles with beansprouts blanched in hot water, splashed with some soy sauce and topped with slices of fishcake and fishballs. I ordered an additional portion of chicken meat (the one meant for nasi ayam) to give the dish extra flavour. Complete the meal with a glass of apple asam boi from the stall next door and I'm one satisfied customer...

I used to patronise their stall at the "casual market' in Taiping town.

do you know the address of the restaurant?

I still think Ipoh has the best fried keow teow, curry mee and mee kicap! You can never go wrong with any stall selling these fares. But don't take my words for it...cubalah sendiri! Hihi...

Hi Oldstock,

I'm more of a mee bandung & mee hongkong lover, but I cannot resist Mee rebus and never fail to order it where ever it's on the menu any where but the best was still Nasir Mee Rebus of JB seafront, last I gorge myself silly was in his PJ stall - ya one of those simple fare that u'll die for..hehehe.

Kuey teow goreng... yummy. It will always bring me back to a Kota Tinggi riverside restaurant way in 1973 where they serve the best of such a dish. For mee Hailam(goreng basah), I will not forget the one at Kluang Guesthouse and ofcourse Hwa Moi Restaurant in Johor Baru.

Sdra Zulkifli,

I've edited the post to add another pic that shows the bill. The address is written as No. 5, Regat Tupai.

I wonder if anyone can tell me what Regat means...

Lili,

I've been told that Ipoh has many good eating places. I probably need to visit Ipoh a few times to sample all the various food you have listed... itu belum lagi sebut pasal nasi ganja vanggey, hainan chicken rice dan macam-macam lagi.

Hi Tommy,

JB has a number of good mee rebus stalls, among the more famous is Hj Wahid and Lan Janggut.

I love mee hongkong too!

Aizan,

In my travel up and down the NSE, this is the only stall that I find selling apple asam boi.

D,

I dah lama tak post about food :-)

Pak Zawi,

Kedai Hwa Mui kat tengah bandar JB used to be our favourite place to eat chicken chop. Those days, there weren't that many restaurants selling western type dishes.

As,

I'm always on the look out for good eating places. Selagi selera masih ada :-)

Helang,

Mee kicap is not that difficult to do. Try la masak sendiri... I'm sure kat NY boleh dapat bahan-bahannya.

Kalau susah nak dapat mee kuning, you try masak maggi kicap. Sure sedap, heheheh..

I've always been more of a noodle person than nasi.. and this is actually making me hung-e-ry (restraining myself from going downstairs for a quick maggi fix) ;p

Justiffa,

One of my favourite late night snack is maggi goreng. Tambah telur mata lembu dan ikan bilis goreng... and we can't call it a `snack' anymore.

Salam OLDSTOCK

I went there too...during our Taiping road trip in January. Seems like it is a must for out of towners.

Did you spot The Casuarina Hotel, where Uncle Lee said he used to bring his ehem..friends?

Spooky looking place overlooking the lake...good place to bring your ehem friends and keeping them under the blanket too scared to move...(Sorry Lee, if you are reading this...can't resist jabbing your funny bone again!)

Salam anne,

I was in Taiping for a very short while, so no time really to have a real look around the town.

I'll have a lookout for that ehem place next time I'm there :-)
