It's the end of the run...

Wak Amid is a neighbour of mine who drives a taxi for a living. His youngest son named Yusof, was a close friend of my own youngest son Imran. Two years ago, when Imran joined the Astro Run For Fun activity, Yusof  wanted to tag along too. The story of this run was one of the earliest posts in this blog and can be read here -> Fun Run.

Notice that I referred to Yusof in the past tense...  A few hours ago, I watched Wak Amid bury his son, who passed away last night. Yusof  had been in and out of hospital since the beginning of the year. He had lost his appetite and became frail and skinny. I visited the young man at the Sultan Ismail Hospital, in Pandan, Johor Bahru last weekend and was close to tears at seeing his undernourished body, much like the image of the starving children of Africa. This morning, I could not hold back the tears anymore as I watched family members give their final kisses to the boy before the white sheets of the shroud were tied up for the final time.

Doctors could not really determine the cause of his illness but officially the COD was put down as tuberculosis. Yusof Bin Amid celebrated his 13th birthday in hospital on 31 March 2010.

Ya Allah, ya tuhan kami.... kami mohon kemurahan Mu untuk mengampuni dosa-dosa insan muda ini dan ditempatkan roh beliau di kalangan orang-orang yang beriman.

Al-Fatihah.

No parent should have to bury their children. It's just heartbreaking.

When thing like this happens, you keep thinking how are you going to cope if it is your own children.
Al Fatihah.

It always breaks my heart to hear of a child's passing. May his soul rest in peace.

It is horrifying to think that someone can still die of tuberculosis in Malaysia, in the 21st century.

Oldstock, I'm your silent reader and this is my first comment.

I had a dream last night abt death.

Kematian tidak pernah mengenal usia. Marilah sama2 kita segera bertaubat dan memperbanyakkan ibadat sebelum dipanggil pulang.

Aizan,

I actually did not mention that this is the second son that Wak Amid has lost. Many years ago a teenage son died because of tumour growth. Very trying indeed..

Lili, it was particulary sad for us because Yusof was a close friend of my son and comes to our house often. My last words to him was when I visited him in hospital... somehow at that time I felt it would be the last time I see him. And so it was..

As, I cannot imagine if it was one of my own. I don't think I'm brave enough to consider that for now.

Pak Awang, thank you for the kind thoughts. It was exactly what Wak Amid mentioned to me as we sat to one side while the grave-diggers were shovelling in the earth... Allah sedang menguji kesabaran saya, sudah dua orang anak saya dia ambil.

There wasn't much that I can say to console him..

mamasita,

As we like to say, things happen for a reason, whatever that may be... the boy looked to my son as sort of mentor and we were looking forward to help him in his studies too. But I guess the All-mighty has other plans for him.

Pat, that's why I'm puzzled too. The first time he was admitted, doctors could not find out what was wrong. The father had to resort to trying out traditional remedy... which of course, didn't do any better. Tuberculosis is maybe just something convenient for the hospital to put down. I guess, there are still many ailments that we still do not know about.

Justiffa,

Thanks for the kind thoughts. My son is a runner, and the young friend was always looking at emulating him.

Salam takziah. My doa for little Yusof.

I can't bear the feelings of parents losing a child. When my son was hospitalized for a month due to multiple sclerosis (paralysed waist down), I felt the everything around me collapsing.

Salam Liza,

Sorry I missed this comment. How's things now with your son?

Nice to meeting you the other day.
